“There you are darling. Sleep well and have nice dreams.”
As the child’s mother turned to leave the bedside, she uttered out loud the familiar phrase of “Snug as Bug in a Rug.”
An hour later father was dispatched to the child’s room to see why all of the crying and yelling had suddenly started.
“What’s wrong little fellow, did a dream or something scare you?”
“THERE’S A BUG!” the child screamed as he raised his arms to be held. “I can’t stay here. It will make me sick.”
“Where did you see a bug?” asked father, as he glanced at the walls and ceiling.
“Mum said it is in the Rug! Don’t leave me here.”
“It’s all right. Mum was just using an expression that means you were comfortable in bed.”
“I’m not comfortable!” came out with tears. “I don’t want to be sick like you were last week.”
“I don’t remember being sick. What made you think I was?”
“You Sneezed and Mum said, you may have picked up a bug. Now it is in the rug.“
Father turned to examine the rug. “I don’t see any bug. I think you will be perfectly safe. If I see one, I’ll get rid of it.”
“DON’T PICK IT UP. It will bite you”.
The child then turned over and went back to sleep. Hopefully to dream about things other than bugs.
